Light Requirements

Phalaenopsis need low light intensity. If Phalaenopsis orchid is receiving too much light, the leaves will become a yellow-green color and could possibly develop a red-tint around the leaves edges, and too little light will cause the leaves to become a very dark green color. In order to encourage the growth of flower spikes, the temperature should be dropped to 12°C. If Phalaenopsis orchid becomes too hot or too cold this could damage the flowers and lead to bud blast which is when the flower buds fall off before they are able to open and be enjoyed.

Humidity Requirements

Humidity should be atleast 50% or , however, Excess moist conditions encourages fungal and bacterial rot which will cause damage to the plant and less humidity will dry out the plants completely and discourages the growth of the plants and ultimately damage the plant. Humidity can be controlled by proper air movement and foggers.

Fertilizer Requirements

When Phalaenopsis orchids are in full growth (summers) they should be fertilized with orchid food weekly. If the Phalaenopsis is not in active growth (winter) then fertilizing with orchid food twice a month. It is important to never fertilize an orchid that is completely dry. This can cause major damage to the roots.

Phalaenopsis should be repotted in a course mix which can hold moisture and can maintain humidity. Media should be as such so that water can drains out properly and provide proper aeration. Phalaenopsis orchids tend to do very well in clear transparent plastic pots.
