Phalaenopsis roots must grow in damp conditions so never let the roots dry out. It is also important to make sure that the roots don’t sit in standing water because this can lead to root rotting. Water more frequently in warmer months and less in the cooler months. A Phalaenopsis orchid should be watered in the morning so that they can get sufficient time to dry.
Phalaenopsis need low light intensity. If Phalaenopsis orchid is receiving too much light, the leaves will become a yellow-green color and could possibly develop a red-tint around the leaves edges, and too little light will cause the leaves to become a very dark green color. The best place to grow you Phalaenopsis orchid indoors. It is important to not let Phalaenopsis orchid get direct sunlight because this could cause sunburn to the plant.
The ideal daytime temperatures to grow your Phalaenopsis orchid is between 18°C to 35°C, and night temperatures should be about 18°C to 28°C. Although they will need more frequent watering in order to ensure that they do not completely dry out. In order to encourage the growth of flower spikes, the temperature should be dropped to 12°C. If Phalaenopsis orchid becomes too hot or too cold this could damage the flowers and lead to bud blast which is when the flower buds fall off before they are able to open and be enjoyed.
Humidity should be atleast 50% or , however, Excess moist conditions encourages fungal and bacterial rot which will cause damage to the plant and less humidity will dry out the plants completely and discourages the growth of the plants and ultimately damage the plant. Humidity can be controlled by proper air movement and foggers.
When Phalaenopsis orchids are in full growth (summers) they should be fertilized with orchid food weekly. If the Phalaenopsis is not in active growth (winter) then fertilizing with orchid food twice a month. It is important to never fertilize an orchid that is completely dry. This can cause major damage to the roots.
Phalaenopsis should be repotted in a course mix which can hold moisture and can maintain humidity. Media should be as such so that water can drains out properly and provide proper aeration. Phalaenopsis orchids tend to do very well in clear transparent plastic pots.
